ETSS Daylight Saving Time Information

The following contains critical information about PC and GroupWise Daylight Saving Time patches that everyone will need to understand and act upon.

The recent passage of the U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005, which extends Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the U.S. and Canada by three weeks in the spring and one week in the fall, will affect some messages sent out by GroupWise, Exchange, or any other collaboration system. Appointments sent out before systems were patched for DST may1 be off by one hour during the period from March 11 - 31 and October 29 - November 4, 2007.

Appointments scheduled during the affected time period (March 11 - 31 and October 29 - November 4) will need to be checked for accuracy and may need to be rescheduled for the correct time.  For more information about filtering appointments and ensuring accuracy for this time period, please click here. In addition, we recommend you include the intended time of day for your appointments during this period in the subject line of each appointment you send out. This will help eliminate confusion for this time period.

As information, all workstations running Microsoft Windows require a patch to adjust for the new DST dates.  All ETSS supported computers have already been patched via our patch server during the last bi-monthly patches.

If your department has university-owned laptops, they will also need to be updated.  To install the patch agent which will automatically update these laptops, click here from the laptop on which it needs to be installed, Please keep in mind that this agent is only licensed for university-owned PCs and laptops.

BlackBerry devices also require a DST patch. If you use a BlackBerry supported by ETSS, your device will be patched automatically from the server over the next few weeks.

Many PDA devices will also need to be patched.  If you have a Windows Mobile device (Pocket PC, iPaq, Smartphone, etc), please visit Microsoft's site for applicable updates and instructions.  If you have a Palm device, you will need to manually adjust your device for Daylight Saving Time.

Please be aware that home PCs/laptops should also be patched for DST.  If you use the GroupWise desktop client on your home PC or laptop (or any other calendaring system), you must update with the DST patch.  To obtain the appropriate patch for your home operating system, please visit Microsoft's DST site or check the Windows update service to determine whether it has been installed.

If you have any questions about Daylight Saving Time or need assistance with any of the patches mentioned above, please contact the ETSS Help Desk at 515-3110.
